The work of the Trust
Our work at the Shaldon Wildlife Trust is vital to the long-term survival of
many animals which are at risk of extinction in their natural habitat. Protected,
loved and cared for, our charges happily raise offspring, safe from danger and
the ravages of man.
Threat of extinction
By establishing breeding colonies of animals which are threatened with extinction
in the wild, we have become a modern-day Ark. We co-operate fully with other zoos,
wildlife parks and conservation bodies through the Species Information System, a
computer database which supplies information about breeding colonies and available
breeding partners. Our aim in eventually to strengthen the populations in the wild.
None of our animals have been taken from the wild; the majority were born in our
zoo or come from other collections taking part in specific breeding programmes to
ensure their survival.
