Behaviour Meerkats live in groups of up to 30 individuals. One 'sentry' animal will keep watch for danger whilst others forage for food. Dark rings around the eyes act as sunglasses for spotting approacing birds of prey. Meerkats can also close their ears while digging.
Diet Mainly insects, spiders and scorpions as well as lizards eggs, roots and bulbs.
Habitat Open grassland and semi-desert savannahs.
